How to Clean Your Dryer Vent

How to Clean Your Dryer Vent

Why It Matters

Lint buildup in dryer vents causes 2,900 house fires per year. It also makes your dryer take longer and use more energy.

Signs You Need Cleaning

  • Clothes take more than one cycle to dry
  • The dryer is hot to the touch
  • Musty smell on clothes
  • Lint visible around the door seal
  • The exterior vent flap doesn't open when dryer runs

Steps

  1. Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall
  2. Disconnect the vent hose from the back
  3. Use a dryer vent brush to clean the hose and the wall duct
  4. Clean the exterior vent flap
  5. Reconnect with a proper clamp (not screws — they catch lint)
