How Much Do You Need?

Most climates: R-38 to R-49 (12-15 inches of fiberglass batts)
Cold climates: R-49 to R-60

Check Your Level

Go into the attic with a ruler. If you can see the floor joists, you don't have enough insulation. Measure the depth and multiply by R-value per inch.

Types

Fiberglass batts: DIY-friendly, R-3.1 per inch
Blown-in cellulose: Better coverage, R-3.5 per inch, needs a blower machine
Spray foam: Best air sealing, R-6.5 per inch, professional installation
