How to Caulk Like a Pro
Where to Caulk
- Around tubs, showers, and sinks
- Window and door frames (exterior)
- Where the wall meets the floor in wet areas
- Around plumbing and electrical penetrations
Steps
- Remove old caulk with a caulk removal tool
- Clean and dry the surface
- Cut the caulk tube tip at a 45° angle
- Apply steady pressure and move at a consistent speed
- Smooth with a wet finger or caulk tool
Types
- Silicone: Wet areas (tub, shower). Waterproof, flexible, doesn't take paint.
- Latex: Interior trim and gaps. Paintable, easy cleanup.
- Polyurethane: Exterior. Most durable, bonds to everything.
