How to Caulk Like a Pro

Where to Caulk

  • Around tubs, showers, and sinks
  • Window and door frames (exterior)
  • Where the wall meets the floor in wet areas
  • Around plumbing and electrical penetrations

Steps

  1. Remove old caulk with a caulk removal tool
  2. Clean and dry the surface
  3. Cut the caulk tube tip at a 45° angle
  4. Apply steady pressure and move at a consistent speed
  5. Smooth with a wet finger or caulk tool

Types

  • Silicone: Wet areas (tub, shower). Waterproof, flexible, doesn't take paint.
  • Latex: Interior trim and gaps. Paintable, easy cleanup.
  • Polyurethane: Exterior. Most durable, bonds to everything.
