Spring Checklist

  1. Inspect for loose, warped, or rotted boards
  2. Check the ledger board (where deck meets house) for soft spots
  3. Tighten all hardware — bolts, screws, railing connections
  4. Power wash the surface
  5. Apply stain or sealant every 2-3 years

The Screwdriver Test

Poke structural members (posts, joists, ledger) with a screwdriver. If it sinks easily, the wood is rotted and needs replacement.
