Gutter Cleaning Guide
When to Clean
At least twice a year — late spring (after pollen and seeds) and late fall (after leaves). More often if you have overhanging trees.
Steps
- Set up a ladder on stable ground
- Scoop debris with a gutter scoop or garden trowel
- Flush with a garden hose to check flow
- Check that downspouts are clear — water should flow freely
- Extend downspouts at least 4-6 feet from the foundation
Gutter Guards
Guards reduce cleaning frequency but don't eliminate it. Micro-mesh guards work best. Expect to pay $5-$10 per linear foot installed.
