DIY Roof Inspection Guide

DIY Roof Inspection Guide

From the Ground (Binoculars)

  • Missing, cracked, or curling shingles
  • Rust or damage to flashing around chimneys and vents
  • Sagging areas
  • Moss or algae growth
  • Granules accumulating in gutters (sign of shingle wear)

From Inside (Attic)

  • Daylight coming through the roof
  • Water stains on rafters or sheathing
  • Soft or spongy spots

When to Call a Roofer

If you see any of the above, get a professional inspection. Most roofers inspect for free. A new roof costs $8,000-$15,000, but catching problems early can extend its life by years.
