Understanding Your Electrical Panel
Breaker Basics
- Each breaker protects one circuit
- 15-amp breakers: lighting and general outlets
- 20-amp breakers: kitchen, bathroom, laundry outlets
- 30-50 amp: dryer, range, AC, water heater (dedicated circuits)
Label Your Panel
Every breaker should be labeled. Turn off one breaker at a time and walk through the house to identify what it controls.
Warning Signs
- Breakers that trip frequently
- Burning smell from the panel
- Rust, corrosion, or scorch marks
- Buzzing sounds
If you see any of these, call an electrician immediately.
