Understanding Your Electrical Panel

Understanding Your Electrical Panel

Breaker Basics

  • Each breaker protects one circuit
  • 15-amp breakers: lighting and general outlets
  • 20-amp breakers: kitchen, bathroom, laundry outlets
  • 30-50 amp: dryer, range, AC, water heater (dedicated circuits)

Label Your Panel

Every breaker should be labeled. Turn off one breaker at a time and walk through the house to identify what it controls.

Warning Signs

  • Breakers that trip frequently
  • Burning smell from the panel
  • Rust, corrosion, or scorch marks
  • Buzzing sounds

If you see any of these, call an electrician immediately.
