GFCI Outlets Explained

GFCI Outlets Explained

What They Do

GFCI outlets detect ground faults (electricity going where it shouldn't) and shut off power in 1/25th of a second. They prevent electrocution in wet areas.

Required Locations

Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, outdoor outlets, laundry rooms, and within 6 feet of any water source.

Testing

  1. Press TEST — the power should cut off
  2. Press RESET — power should restore
  3. Test monthly

One GFCI outlet can protect multiple downstream outlets on the same circuit.
