Preventing Mold in Your Home

Preventing Mold in Your Home

The Rule

Mold needs moisture. Control moisture and you control mold. Keep indoor humidity below 50%.

High-Risk Areas

  • Bathrooms — use exhaust fans, leave doors open after showers
  • Basement — run a dehumidifier, fix any water intrusion
  • Kitchen — use the range hood when cooking
  • Laundry — vent the dryer outside, clean washer gaskets
  • Crawlspace — install a vapor barrier on the ground

If You Find Mold

Small areas (less than 10 sq ft) can be cleaned with borax solution. Larger areas require professional remediation.
