Complete Smoke Detector Guide

Complete Smoke Detector Guide

Types

  • Ionization: Best for fast-flaming fires (paper, grease). More false alarms near kitchens.
  • Photoelectric: Best for slow-smoldering fires (electrical, upholstery). Fewer false alarms.
  • Dual-sensor: Both technologies. Best overall protection.

Placement

One on every level, inside every bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. Ceiling mounted or high on walls.

Maintenance

  • Test monthly by pressing the test button
  • Replace batteries annually (or use 10-year sealed units)
  • Replace the entire detector every 10 years — they lose sensitivity
  • Never paint over a smoke detector
