Whole-House Surge Protection Guide

Whole-House Surge Protection Guide

What Surges Damage

Power surges destroy electronics, HVAC control boards, appliance circuits, and garage door openers. Lightning is the dramatic cause, but most surges come from the power grid or large appliances cycling on and off.

Two Layers of Protection

  1. Whole-house surge protector: Installed at the electrical panel ($100-$300 installed). Stops large surges.
  2. Point-of-use surge strips: At individual devices. Stops smaller surges that pass through the whole-house unit.

Both layers together provide the best protection.
