What to Do When a Breaker Trips

What to Do When a Breaker Trips

Steps

  1. Go to your electrical panel
  2. Find the tripped breaker — it will be in the middle position, not fully ON or OFF
  3. Flip it fully to OFF first
  4. Then flip it to ON

If It Trips Again

Unplug everything on that circuit and try again. If it stays on, plug things back in one at a time to find the overloaded device.

Never Do This

  • Never replace a breaker with a higher-amp one — the wires will overheat
  • Never hold a breaker in the ON position
  • Never ignore a breaker that trips repeatedly
