How geocoding works

When you add or update an address, we call the US Census Bureau geocoder (free, no API key) to look up:

  • Latitude/longitude — used for weather alerts and the property map image.
  • Climate zone — drives seasonal maintenance templates (when to service heating vs. cooling, winterize pipes, etc.).
  • Radon zone — pulled from EPA county-level data.
If our geocoder can't resolve your address (rural routes and very new developments are the most common cases), you can enter latitude and longitude manually under Home settings → Location.

Property map image

We fetch a satellite image of your property from Google Static Maps and cache it for 30 days. If the image doesn't appear, make sure geocoding succeeded — the map needs valid coordinates.

Updating your home later

Go to Home settings. Changing the address re-runs geocoding and updates your climate/radon zones automatically. Seasonal tasks on your existing schedule won't be rewritten, but newly generated items will use the updated zones.
