Annual Furnace Maintenance Checklist

Annual Furnace Maintenance Checklist

Why Annual Maintenance Matters

A well-maintained furnace lasts 15-20 years. Without maintenance, you risk breakdowns during the coldest months and carbon monoxide leaks.

DIY Checklist (Fall)

  1. Replace the air filter
  2. Clean the area around the furnace — remove boxes and clutter
  3. Test the thermostat — switch to heat and verify it kicks on
  4. Listen for unusual sounds — banging, squealing, or clicking
  5. Check the flue pipe for rust or disconnections
  6. Test carbon monoxide detectors near the furnace

Professional Tune-Up

Schedule a pro tune-up every fall. They'll clean the burners, check the heat exchanger for cracks, test safety controls, and measure combustion efficiency. Cost: $80-$150.
