Ceiling Fan Direction: Summer vs Winter

Ceiling Fan Direction: Summer vs Winter

The Rule

  • Summer: Counterclockwise (looking up). Creates a downdraft breeze that cools you.
  • Winter: Clockwise on low speed. Pushes warm air down from the ceiling without a direct breeze.

How to Switch

There's a small switch on the motor housing between the blades. Turn the fan off, flip the switch, turn it back on.

Savings

Using ceiling fans lets you set your thermostat 4°F higher in summer without losing comfort, saving about 6% on cooling costs.
