How to Change Your HVAC Air Filter

How to Change Your HVAC Air Filter

Why It Matters

A dirty air filter restricts airflow, makes your system work harder, and increases energy bills by up to 15%. It also reduces air quality and can shorten the life of your furnace or AC.

When to Change It

Check monthly. Replace every 1-3 months depending on filter type, pets, and allergies. If you can't see light through it, replace it.

Steps

  1. Turn off the HVAC system
  2. Locate the filter slot — usually between the return air duct and the furnace
  3. Slide out the old filter and note the size printed on the frame (e.g., 20x25x1)
  4. Insert the new filter with the arrow pointing toward the furnace
  5. Turn the system back on

Pro Tips

  • Buy filters in bulk — it's cheaper and you'll always have one ready
  • Set a phone reminder for monthly checks
  • Higher MERV ratings (11-13) catch more particles but restrict airflow — check your system's recommendation
