Home Humidity Control Guide

Ideal Range

30-50% relative humidity. Below 30% causes dry skin, static, and cracking wood. Above 50% promotes mold, dust mites, and condensation.

Too Dry (Winter)

  • Add a whole-house humidifier to your furnace ($200-$500 installed)
  • Portable humidifiers work for single rooms
  • Keep humidifier pads clean to prevent mold

Too Humid (Summer)

  • Your AC is a dehumidifier — make sure it's sized correctly
  • Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans
  • A standalone dehumidifier works for basements
  • Check for air leaks that let humid outdoor air in
