Water Heater Anode Rod — When and How to Replace

Water Heater Anode Rod — When and How to Replace

What It Does

The anode rod is a sacrificial metal rod inside your water heater tank. It corrodes instead of the tank lining. When the rod is used up, the tank starts rusting from inside.

When to Replace

Every 3-5 years for standard magnesium rods. Check it by removing it from the top of the tank — if it's less than 1/2 inch thick or coated in calcium, replace it.

Powered Anode Rods

Powered (titanium) anode rods last 20+ years and eliminate the rotten egg smell that magnesium rods can cause. They cost more ($80-$150) but never need replacement.
