How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

When Pipes Freeze

When temperatures drop below 20°F, uninsulated pipes in exterior walls, attics, crawlspaces, and garages are at risk.

Prevention

  • Insulate exposed pipes with foam pipe insulation ($1-$2 per 6-foot section)
  • Let faucets drip during extreme cold — moving water doesn't freeze
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls
  • Keep the thermostat at 55°F or higher, even when away
  • Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor faucets

If a Pipe Freezes

Open the faucet. Apply gentle heat with a hair dryer or heating pad. Never use a torch. If you can't find or reach the frozen section, call a plumber.
