How to Flush Your Water Heater

How to Flush Your Water Heater

Why Flush

Sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank, reducing efficiency and capacity. Annual flushing extends the heater's life by 3-5 years.

Steps

  1. Turn off the gas or breaker to the water heater
  2. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom
  3. Run the hose outside or to a floor drain
  4. Open the drain valve and let water flow until it runs clear (3-5 minutes)
  5. Close the valve, disconnect the hose
  6. Turn the gas/breaker back on

When to Do It

Once a year. If you hear popping or rumbling from the tank, flush it immediately — that's sediment boiling.
