How to Flush Your Water Heater
Why Flush
Sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank, reducing efficiency and capacity. Annual flushing extends the heater's life by 3-5 years.
Steps
- Turn off the gas or breaker to the water heater
- Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom
- Run the hose outside or to a floor drain
- Open the drain valve and let water flow until it runs clear (3-5 minutes)
- Close the valve, disconnect the hose
- Turn the gas/breaker back on
When to Do It
Once a year. If you hear popping or rumbling from the tank, flush it immediately — that's sediment boiling.
