How to Check for Silent Toilet Leaks

The Test

  1. Remove the tank lid
  2. Drop 5-10 drops of food coloring into the tank water
  3. Wait 15 minutes — do NOT flush
  4. Check the bowl water — if it's colored, the flapper is leaking

The Fix

Replace the flapper. Universal flappers cost $5-$10 and take 5 minutes to install. A leaking toilet wastes up to 200 gallons per day.
