Know Your Water Shutoff Valves

Know Your Water Shutoff Valves

Why This Matters

In a plumbing emergency, the first 60 seconds determine whether you have a small cleanup or a flood. Know where your shutoffs are BEFORE you need them.

Main Shutoff

Usually near where the water line enters your house — basement, crawlspace, or utility closet. Turn clockwise to close. Test it annually to make sure it works.

Individual Shutoffs

  • Toilets: Oval handle behind the toilet, near the floor
  • Sinks: Under the cabinet — separate hot and cold knobs
  • Washing machine: Behind the washer — red (hot) and blue (cold)
  • Water heater: On the cold inlet pipe above the tank
