Septic System Maintenance Guide

Septic System Maintenance Guide

How Often to Pump

Every 3-5 years for a family of four. Smaller tanks or larger families need more frequent pumping.

Do's

  • Spread laundry loads throughout the week
  • Use septic-safe toilet paper
  • Pump on schedule

Don'ts

  • No wipes (even "flushable" ones)
  • No grease, paint, chemicals, or medications
  • No driving or parking on the drain field
  • No planting trees near the drain field (roots invade pipes)

Signs of Problems

Slow drains, sewage odors, soggy ground over the drain field, or lush green grass over the tank in winter.
