How to Test Your Sump Pump

How to Test Your Sump Pump

When to Test

Test monthly and before any expected heavy rain. The worst time to discover a dead sump pump is during a flood.

Steps

  1. Pour a 5-gallon bucket of water slowly into the sump pit
  2. The float switch should rise and the pump should kick on
  3. Water should pump out within seconds
  4. The pump should shut off when the water level drops

Backup Power

Consider a battery backup sump pump. When the power goes out during a storm — which is exactly when you need it most — a battery backup keeps pumping for 8-12 hours.
